The Sabz Journalism 3-day training on environmental reporting has effectively sensitized and trained environmental journalists, digital content producers, and filmmakers. These environmental sensitization workshops have been held in five key cities—Peshawar, Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, and Quetta—ensuring wide geographical representation. The capacity-building program aims to enhance participants’ technical and professional skills in environmental reporting, digital content production, and audience engagement.
Lead trainer Afia Salam, a senior environmental journalist, along with a team of domain-specific experts, has conducted comprehensive sessions during the training. The trainers have included digital content experts Talha Ahad, Founder & CEO of The Centrum Media; Ayaz Khan, Founder of MoJo Pakistan; Muhammad Zawar, Senior Journalist at Khyber News; and Naseer Rind, CEO of Pawaal Films. Digital marketing and monetization experts Badar Khushnood, former Country Director at Google and Facebook; Tayyeb Afridi, Co-Founder of Tribal News Network; Hassan Meer, COO of WOMENSPIRE Skills Development Training Centre; and Shah Zaib, CEO of SolCon, a digital innovation and development firm, have also contributed their expertise.
This capacity-building program has produced significant outcomes that extend beyond the training itself. It has promoted collaboration and networking among participants from diverse geographical regions, laying the groundwork for continued exchange and collective impact.
Training Approach
The program has introduced an innovative interdisciplinary approach to environmental reporting, incorporating elements from earth sciences—such as geography, geology, and oceanography—and social sciences, including anthropology, psychology, and good governance. This approach has encouraged the adoption of novel storytelling techniques and the integration of intersectionality, resulting in more comprehensive and impactful environmental reporting. Participants have leveraged their newfound skills in digital content creation, data-driven storytelling, and collaborative reporting to address pressing environmental issues. It has led to innovations in reporting methods, increased awareness through cross-border collaborations, and a shift towards digital media platforms. The decision to appoint local trainers has proven to be highly effective, as they have conducted sessions in native languages and provided contextually relevant examples.
