The project’s baseline activity involves a comprehensive assessment of the current state of environmental journalism in Pakistan, identifying key challenges and opportunities. This includes evaluating the existing capacity of journalists, media outlets, and the overall media landscape concerning environmental reporting. The baseline activity involves conducting interviews, surveys, and content analysis to understand the baseline knowledge and practices within the journalism community regarding project components. This foundational research serves as a critical starting point for tailoring the fellowship program to address specific gaps and needs, ensuring a targeted and impactful approach to enhancing environmental journalism as per the project goal and objectives.
The primary objectives of the baseline assessment are twofold: first, to gauge the participants’ knowledge and understanding of the entire spectrum of project activities, with a particular emphasis on establishing a foundation for the subsequent training curriculum. This involves assessing the proficiency and awareness of journalists, filmmakers, and documentary producers. Second, the assessment aims to identify the effectiveness of existing environmental journalism reporting standards, evaluate the frequency of reporting, assess the impact of available policies, and measure the effectiveness of current training programs. By undertaking this baseline assessment, the project seeks to delineate the strengths and weaknesses within the current landscape, enabling the formulation of targeted strategies and interventions to enhance environmental reporting and journalism practices in line with the project’s overarching goal.

Consultation
A consultation with industry experts has been organized in Karachi to validate the training curriculum content. The purpose of this consultation is to allow stakeholders to confirm findings and provide feedback on the needs assessment for training journalists and digital content producers in climate change reporting. This approach ensures that the assessment accurately reflects the needs of the target group and aligns with current trends in the media industry.
Participants include experts from the environmental journalism industry, media professionals, policymakers, academics, and civil society representatives, all of whom possess technical knowledge and experience in their fields. By involving these experts, the consultation aims to develop an authentic, endorsed, relevant, and high-quality curriculum.
