This initiative aims to reduce the gender gap in media and strengthens the network between U.S. and Pakistani journalists. Participants benefit from both international and local perspectives, enhancing their understanding and approach to gender-sensitive journalism. A total of six training workshops—two in-person and four online—have been conducted with 108 journalists from Sindh and Balochistan by U.S. and Pakistani trainers to promote gender-sensitive reporting.
As a result of the training, participants have produced and published 55 news stories across leading mainstream media outlets, including ARY News, Dawn News, Geo News, Samaa News, Express Tribune, and 24NewsHD. These stories have been raising awareness and facilitating discourse on a diverse array of gender issues often overlooked in news coverage. The training has also empowered journalists to practice solutions journalism through both traditional media and independent digital platforms and startups, such as blogs and vlogs, addressing deeply embedded roots of gender-based violence (GBV) across Pakistani society.
The stories have been covering topics such as women’s participation, leadership, economic conditions, transgender rights, health, GBV, the impact of COVID-19, education, inheritance, and reproductive health. The success of these workshops has been driven by the use of interactive and collaborative activities, real-life case studies, and examples of both appropriate and inappropriate reporting on human rights issues and gender-based violence.
