These sessions aim to empower media students to leverage their individual and collective digital platforms to raise awareness about gender-based violence (GBV) and promote the importance of gender-sensitive journalism among their peers. We have initially organized in-person training sessions at various locations but transitioned to virtual sessions due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The training program has comprised 22 workshops—4 in-person and 18 online—that have sensitized 786 media students from universities across Sindh and Balochistan to the nuances of gender-sensitive reporting. The participants have included students from Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur; Sukkur IBA University; University of Sindh; University of Balochistan; Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering, and Management Sciences (BUITEMS); Sindh Madressatul Islam University; Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University Lyari; and Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s University, Quetta.
These sessions have provided not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills and tools essential for ethical journalism. Students have engaged in interactive activities, case studies, and discussions, emphasizing the importance of accurate and respectful reporting on gender issues.
To ensure the application of their learning, students receive ongoing feedback, mentoring, and support through two additional feedback sessions. This guidance helps them in developing high-quality media products, including videos, articles, and blogs. The practical component of the training has empowered students to produce and disseminate 19 news projects on digital platforms, effectively raising awareness about gender issues in their communities.
