Overview

At PULSE, we are committed to promoting collaboration and innovation among journalists, radio professionals, and media practitioners. As part of this mission, PULSE, in partnership with GNMI Pakistan and with the support of the U.S. Consulate General Karachi, hosted the Radio Media Conference at Karachi Arts Council on 13th February 2025, in celebration of World Radio Day.

The conference served as a dynamic platform, bringing together industry experts, media professionals, and policymakers to explore digital transformation, community engagement, and sustainable growth strategies for independent radio journalism.


Purpose


The Radio Media Conference engaged industry experts, radio professionals, and journalists from across regions to explore the evolving landscape of radio broadcasting in a rapidly changing media environment. With a focus on global trends and regional challenges, the conference aims to develop a strategic framework for the long-term growth and sustainability of radio, particularly in South Asia and beyond. By equipping radio professionals with cutting-edge insights, emerging technologies, and industry best practices, the conference nurtures a more dynamic, inclusive, and impactful future for radio journalism worldwide.

Community-Driven Storytelling in Digital Radio

Faysal Aziz Khan, Senior Broadcast Journalist & President, PULSE (USA), emphasized the need for community-driven storytelling in radio’s digital evolution. He highlighted the role of podcasts, mobile streaming, and AI-driven content in making radio more engaging while preserving its essence.


U.S. Commitment to Media Innovation

Michael Chadwick, Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Consulate General Karachi, reaffirmed U.S. support for media innovation, independent journalism, and digital broadcasting. He highlighted radio’s role in civic engagement and economic development, especially in underserved regions.



Government Support for Digital Radio Growth

Sharjeel Inam Memon, Information Minister of Sindh, acknowledged radio’s impact on public discourse and community engagement. He outlined his government’s efforts to expand radio’s reach, support independent journalism, and promote digital innovation in broadcasting.

The Future of Radio: Industry Insights

Najia Ashar, President, GNMI, emphasized the need for content innovation, digital audience engagement, and revenue diversification to sustain the radio industry. She highlighted AI-driven broadcasting and digital platforms as key drivers of growth while preserving radio’s grassroots significance.


Panel Discussion: “Radio 2.0 – The Digital Transformation of Community-Centered Radio”

Moderated by Nadia Naqi (Broadcast Journalist), the panel featured Wusatullah Khan (Senior Journalist BBC Urdu), Zulfiqar Shah (Radio Media Expert), Mehboob Sarwar (PBC Karachi), Irum Tanveer (Director General, Press Information Department), and Sara Taher Khan (Radio Media Expert). Discussions focused on:

  • Utilizing digital tools & AI to enhance storytelling and audience engagement.
  • Developing sustainable funding models to ensure financial resilience.
  • Advocating for policy reforms to strengthen independent media regulations.


Strategic Roadmap for Radio Sustainability

  • The conference concluded with a comprehensive roadmap to ensure radio’s long-term sustainability in the region. Key recommendations included:
  • Expanding digital infrastructure to enhance accessibility and outreach.
  • Investing in journalist training programs to build digital expertise.
  • Developing sustainable funding mechanisms to support independent radio initiatives.
  • Advocating for media policy reforms to uphold press freedom and public interest journalism.
